'70s-style Telemaster

Posted on December 5, 2013

I made this mostly from parts collected from old projects and bought on ebay. It's a beast - it has a lot of mojo and I've never seen a similar take on a telemaster.

The neck pickup (a low-output PAF) has a nice crunch - perfect for some Keith Richards rhythm sounds. The bridge has some twang, although it's a lot darker than a telecaster. I have coaxed some nice Radiohead-type sounds out of it, as well as a bit o' country. The in-between position is nice for strumming chords - kind of Beatles-y.

I'm very happy with how it turned out.

  • I put this one together myself. It turned out great - the neck is nice and chunky, the pickups are fairly low output, and it feels great strapped on - I have always found telecasters a bit plank-like.
  • It's string-through-body, naturally. I went with modern Fender-Ping tuners - I'm not a huge fan of the Klusion or '70s style tuners.
  • I have changed the bridge pickup since taking this photo - this one was a Broadcaster style pickup with cloth wrapped wire, etc. I swapped it out for a hum-cancelling stack.
