DW/PDP Double Drive Acoustic Shell pack

Posted on December 26, 2013

An 8 piece acoustic shell pack that comes with some basic Remo ambassadors and all needed mounting hardware (no snare stand, however). Shells are made of 8-ply poplar wood. Sizes of the shells are 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 2x 22 kicks, and 14x5.5 snare.

This kit is a great kit for the price range. Would highly recommend to anyone wanting to get a two bass drum kit and is on a budget. Compared to any other double kick kit on the market now under $1500, this thing is amazing. Every other kit like this in that price range has crappy basswood shells and tries to make up for it by including shitty hardware (I'm looking at you, Sound Percussion).

For $750, you get the shells, mounting hardware for the kicks and the floor toms, and even for the tom toms. No snare stand is included, but no one cares about that. You also get resonant and batter heads for every drum. I wouldn't say they're up to snuff for the studio, but they're certainly fine for live applications and everything else including practice and rehearsal.

The sound of this kit it really great, especially if you're not looking for anything in particular. Poplar is kind of a jack of all trades, as they say, so the drums will sound very punchy, but won't have as much high end as, say, birch does. It will also lack some of the resonance that maple does. I'd say it's a nice blend between the two sides of the fence. The snare in particular is actually decent sounding, which is very uncommon for a shell pack / set of drums. I have mine used as an auxillary snare right now and use a Remo coated ambassador on the batter and have it tuned up pretty high. Has a small ring to it and sounds great.

Overall, the best two kick kit in it's price class and the next 3 price classes. Would not recommend if you have a small practice space or want to do gigging without a trailer. Great for intermediate to professional players.
